The council was formed to offer guidance for the development of the breed, and to encourage the maximum utilisation of the breeds working qualities.
Members receive review magazines containing a schedule of the various schemes available, and the contact names of approved registrars the council has available.
A kennel tattoo symbol is applied for when a member has a litter of puppies that are to be tattooed. This symbol is retained by the kennel, and all puppies bred are given a 3 letter & 3 number tattoo in the dogs right ear. This tattoo has helped many owners recover lost animals over the years. City council animal control officers contact the advisory council registrar, and quickly track down the breeder / owner. The scheme is recognised and supported by The New Zealand Kennel Club.
The majority of German Shepherd dog owners arrange to Hip and elbow score their animals. These scores are required for Breed survey.
Breed Survey looks at the animals breeding, its performance in the specialist breed ring, and most importantly the temperament of the animal. Advice about which breeding lines would compliment the animal, or perhaps help in the selection of a breeding partner.
Structural assessment is available for animals not able to be surveyed, - eg: long coats.
Breed survey working qualification is basic obedience and can be obtained as well as an Endurance test ( ED ) – a 20km bike ride.
A puppy booklet for breeders is available. Seminars on the breed are regularly available, - contact your local advisory council rep. In the first instance approach the South Island German Shepherd League for the name(s) of the local Rep.
